Stewardship Day at Riddell Preserve

Friday, June 24th, 2022

9:00am - 2:30pm 

(volunteers may leave earlier but must arrive on time)

You are warmly invited to lend a hand at Riddell Preserve! This 400-acre preserve above Healdsburg's Dry Creek Valley teems with madrones, redwoods, bays, native wildflowers and other plants, birds, and so much more! Together, we can steward the land to help it be resilient in the face of the impacts of climate change, especially wildfire. Plus, it's fun to get outside with like-minded people, giving back to the land that gives so much to us. 

Riddell Preserve is located on the original homeland of the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians. LandPaths has stewarded the land since 2007. 

Tasks: We'll be improving the health of our grasslands by removing Yellow Starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis), an invasive that has the ability to severely out compete native grassland species. Each plant can disperse more than 35,000 seeds per year, making the removal of Yellow Starthistle a priority in our native grasslands.

Where to Meet: Meet us in the parking lot of the Healdsburg Corporation Yard at 550 Westside Rd, Healdsburg, CA 95448. Once everyone arrives we will caravan to the preserve. Please arrive on time.  
 
Directions: From Highway 101 North, take the Central Healdsburg Exit. and make a slight left on Healdsburg Avenue.  Turn left onto Mill Street.  Continue under the highway overpass as Mill Street turns into Westside Road. The Corporation Yard parking lot will be on the left immediately before the bridge crossing at the intersection of Westside Rd and Lucius Way. There is a "Corporation Yard" sign at the entrance to the parking lot.            
    
From Highway 101 South, take the Westside Exit and turn right on Westside Rd. The Corporation Yard parking lot will be on the left immediately before the bridge crossing at the intersection of Westside Rd and Lucius Way.     

What is LandPaths' Covid-19 Stewardship Day policy? Please read the most recent version of LandPaths' Covid-19 policy before attending the workday.  

Does rain mean the workday is cancelled? The stewardship day will move forward if there is a light drizzle, but a torrential rainstorm will cancel.  Please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 7am the morning of the stewardship day if the weather feels questionable. If you don't hear a notice of cancellation on the outgoing voice message, the stewardship day is moving forward.   

What should you bring?  

• Picnic lunch, snacks & plenty of water, backpack to hold your gear 

• Sturdy boots or shoes that can get muddy 

• Long pants recommended  

• Your own workgloves   

• Hat and sun screen  

• Hand sanitizer and mask 

What else do you need to know?  

• A handwashing station will be available 

• No experience necessary! 

• We'll provide the tools

• Expect to do a 1.5 mile round trip hike up a steep but well-graded trail to the project site  

• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver 

• No restroom on-site 

• No potable water available on the property. Make sure to fill up your water bottle ahead of time  

• No pets or smoking

¡Ven y echa una mano en la reserva Riddell! Esta reserva de 400 acres en Dry Creek Valley de Healdsburg está repleta de madroños, secuoyas, laureles, flores silvestres nativas y otras plantas, pájaros y mucho más. Juntos podemos cuidar la tierra y mantenerla saludable y resistente a los impactos del cambio climático, especialmente los incendios forestales. Además, es divertido salir y pasar tiempo en communidad, y devolver a la tierra un poquito de lo tanto que nos da.

La reserva Riddell se encuentra en la tierra natal original del Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians. LandPaths ha administrado la tierra desde 2007.

Tareas del día: Estaremos mejorando la salud de nuestros pastizales eliminando el Abrepuño amarillo (Centaurea solstitialis), un invasor que tiene la capacidad de competir severamente con las especies nativas de pastizales. ¿Se cancelará si llueve? Se cancelará solamente en caso de una tormenta torrencial. Llame al 707-544-7284 (luego presione 1) después de las 7 am la mañana del día, si desea confirmar. Si no escucha un aviso de cancelación en el mensaje de voz saliente, el día no sido cancelado.

¿Qué traer?:

• Almuerzo, bocadillos y suficiente agua, mochila para guardar sus cosas

• Botas resistentes o zapatos que pueden embarrarse

• Se recomiendan pantalones largos

• Tus propios guantes de trabajo

• Sombrero y protector solar

• Mascarilla y desinfectante de manos

¿Qué más?

• Habrá una estación para lavarse las manos

• No se nesecita experiencia 

• Proveremos todas las herramientas 

• Una caminata al sitio del proyecto de ~ 1.5 millas de ida y vuelta por un sendero empinado, pero bien nivelado

• Se le pedirá que firme una exención de responsabilidad

• No hay baños en el lugar

• No hay agua potable disponible en la propiedad

• No se permiten mascotas ni fumar
