Stewardship Day at Fitch Mountain

Lend a hand at Fitch Mountain Open Space Preserve, a 173-acre protected people-powered park in Healdsburg. With your help, we can steward for ecological health and wildfire resilience, the trees, native plants, animals, and insects that live on this beautiful mountain. Fitch Mountain Preserve is owned by the City of Healdsburg and stewarded with the help of LandPaths.
Fitch Mountain is located on the ancestral home of the Southern Pomo people, past, present, and future. We recognize them as the first people and the first stewards of this land.
You'll be pulling French Broom (Genista monspessulana), an invasive plant that grows very fast and in dense stands. If left to its own devices, French broom can overshadow the plant communities under the trees and become a fuel ladder for wildfire. By pulling broom, we keep them from growing thicker and taller before wildfire season. This helps the forest be healthy and resilient in the chance that wildfire comes through the preserve.
Tasks for the day include:

Hiking up and down moderate slopes.

Pulling French broom seedlings by hand.

Pulling old-growth French broom shrubs with a weed wrench.

Cutting old-growth French broom shrubs with saws and loppers.

Moving woody material to the trail
Directions: We will meet at 9am in the Villa Chanticleer Dog Park Parking Lot (west side of Fitch) and hike to the project site/s together. Here is the google link to the meeting location: Dog Park
What is LandPaths' Covid-19 volunteer workday policy? Please read the most recent version of LandPaths' Covid-19 policy before attending the workday.
Does rain mean the workday is cancelled? The stewardship workday will move forward if there is a light drizzle, but a torrential rainstorm will cancel. Please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 7am the morning of the stewardship day if the weather feels questionable. If you don't hear a notice of cancellation on the outgoing voice message, the stewardship day is moving forward.
What should you bring?

Picnic lunch, snacks & plenty of water, backpack to hold your gear

Sturdy boots or shoes that can get muddy

What else do you need to know?

A handwashing station will be available.

We'll provide the tools.

Expect to do a 1.5 mile round trip hike up a steep but well-graded trail to the project site.

You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.

No restroom on-site

No potable water available on the property. Make sure to fill up your water bottle ahead of time.

¡Es tiempo de reducción de combustibles de incendios forestales en la reserva! Estarás tirando de la escoba francesa (Genista monspessulana), una planta invasora que crece muy rápido y en rodales densos. Si se deja a su suerte, la escoba francesa puede eclipsar las comunidades de plantas debajo de los árboles y convertirse en una escalera de combustible para incendios forestales. Al tirar de la escoba, evitamos que se vuelvan más gruesos y altos antes de la temporada de incendios forestales. Esto ayuda a que el bosque sea saludable y resistente en caso de que un incendio forestal atraviese la reserva.
Tareas del día:

Senderismo de subida y bajada de pendientes moderadas.

Tirando plántulas de escoba francesa a mano.

Arrancar arbustos de escoba francesa maduros con una llave de malas hierbas.

Cortar arbustos viejos de retama francesa con sierras y tijeras de podar.

Mover material leñoso al sendero
Instrucciones: Nos reuniremos a las 9 am en el estacionamiento del parque para perros Villa Chanticleer (lado oeste de Fitch) y caminaremos juntos hacia el sitio del proyecto. Aquí está el enlace de Google a la ubicación de la reunión: Dog Park

¿Se cancelará si llueve? Se cancelará solamente en caso de una tormenta torrencial. Llame al 707-544-7284 (luego presione 1) después de las 7 am la mañana del día, si desea confirmar. Si no escucha un aviso de cancelación en el mensaje de voz saliente, el día no sido cancelado.
