Description

The Cedars Adventure

Saturday, May 11th 10am-5pm

Join LandPaths to explore the strange, Mars-like geologic feature known as The Cedars, located north of Cazadero. This is a rare chance to experience Sonoma County's amazing 11-square mile hidden treasure of ultramafic geology, unique flora, sweeping vistas, and the headwaters of Austin Creek.
Guided by noted botanist and conservationist Roger Raiche of The Cedars Friends and Planet Horticulture, this is a wild adventure through rugged terrain. This tour includes passage through private rural ranches to the limited access BLM Area of Critical Environmental Concern. We'll learn about the history of the land & why this ecological island is a hotspot for scientific research. Please come prepared for steep rugged terrain.

Location: More details will be released upon registration. We’ll be caravanning to another location where we will condense into fewer cars & then caravan to the property.  If you have volunteered to drive your high clearance 4wd (thank you!) please note that there are no gas stations on our route.

We will meet promptly at 10 am on Saturday May 11th, and return to our cars by about 5 pm.  Note on timing: We will do our best to have you back to your car at the above times.  However, if you have a firm commitment on Saturday early evening that you simply can’t miss, this isn’t the hike for you.  The logistics on this large & remote property make time estimates a challenge.  Early departures are simply not possible (except in a medical emergency).

Details, Details:

  • Be prepared to cover rugged terrain; 2-4 miles on steep, winding trails. The hike will consist of 2-4 miles of roads, smaller trails with steep inclines & declines, and several creek crossings.  Walking sticks or poles are recommended due to the gravelly terrain

  • To cover the cost of the private landowners and of LandPaths, we are asking of slilding scale fee of $25-75 per person. We depend of a percentage of our participants donating at higher amounts to cover the costs of these adventures & allow others to pay a lower amount. Thank you for your generosity!

  • Please note that no one will be turned away for a lack of funds. Scholarships are available. Please email jrodriguez@landpaths.org if you need assitance

  • Registration is required. Space is limited to 20 folks per tour and is available on a first come first served basis.
