You are warmly invited to lend a hand at Lafferty Ranch for the health of the forest, soil, and grasslands!  Lafferty is the only publicly owned property near the top of Sonoma Mountain that faces the Pacific and sports views of Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo, Mt. St. Helena and Hood Mountain. The hiking terrain ranges from broad, gentle meadows to challenging hillsides, and you'll enjoy panoramic vistas, groves of venerable oak and bay trees, and a babbling, perennial stream. Along the way, you'll get to see first hand how much water trickles in the upper Adobe Creek, and we'll stop to ponder the relationship between the land and the plants and animals (including ourselves!) that call it home. 

Argh, Yellow star-thistle! (shakes fist). Did you know that one plant from this wily invasive species can disperse more than 35,000 seeds per year? And that Yellow star-thistle tends to dramatically outcompete the precious and threatened native grasslands that are crucial to planetary health? For all these reasons, removing star-thistle at this preserve is a major priority!  

The more people we get out for this day, the more star-thistle we can get rid of! Plus, tending the land with like-minded people is a guaranteed mood-booster and native grasslands are amazing!  

Here’s a sampling of possible tasks that you will do to care for the land: 

• Hiking moderate slopes.  

• Pulling yellow star-thistle plants by hand (wearing gloves that we’ll provide) and placing them in bag. 

• Carrying bags of yellow star-thistle to disposal site.  

• Please note, after registration and before the event, you will receive directions & driving instructions from our team 
• Parking is limited and so we ask that you register in advance at the link above and below. 

• Lunch, snacks, and a water bottle filled with water
• A backpack for your gear
• Sturdy boots or shoes that can get muddy
• Long pants are recommended
• Work gloves
• Hat and sunscreen
• Hand sanitizer and mask
• We'll provide tools, but bring your own if you'd like. 
• No power tools, please

• No experience necessary! Everyone is welcome! We will create tasks according to your abilities
• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver
• No potable water on site
• No restrooms on site
• No pets or smoking

Cuantas más personas participen en este día, ¡más cardos podremos remover! Además, ¡cuidar la tierra con un grupo de personas con ideas afines es un estimulante del estado de ánimo garantizado!  
 
Esta es una lista de las posibles tareas que haremos para cuidar la tierra:   

• Subir pendientes moderadas 

• Remover el cardo a mano y colocarlos en una bolsa 

• Llevar las bolsas al sitio de eliminación 

• Almuerzo, bocadillos y suficiente agua, mochila para guardar sus cosas
• Botas resistentes o zapatos que pueden embarrarse
• Se recomiendan pantalones largos
• Tus propios guantes de trabajo
• Sombrero y protector solar
• Mascarilla y desinfectante de manos

• No se nesecita experiencia 
• Proveremos todas las herramientas 
• Una caminata al sitio del proyecto de ~ 1.5 millas de ida y vuelta por un sendero empinado, pero bien nivelado
• Se le pedirá que firme una exención de responsabilidad
• No hay baños en el lugar
• No hay agua potable disponible en la propiedad
• No se permiten mascotas ni fumar
