We're excited to introduce this brand new workshop! This is a three-day skills training course in the basic skills, practices and implementation of slow restoration forestry practices. You'll learn basic ecological forestry practices, tree and other plant identification, proper hand tool use and maintenance, forest thinning protocols as outlined by Calfire, forestry for ecosystem restoration, and proper burn pile formation and implementation.
Please note that this registration form is for Session I of the workshop, which is limited to women and non-binary participants between the ages of 18 -30. A second session with the same material is being offered on October 27 - October 29 at Riddell Perserve. Session II is open to everyone, ages 18+. What is slow restoration?
Slow restoration refers to an approach to stewarding the land that is primarily hand tool based and focuses on taking the whole ecosystem into account and caring for it in a mindful and observant way.
When and where is it?
Where: Riddell Preserve - Healdsburg, California
October 20-22, 2023
Friday- 9am to 3pm, Saturday - 9am to 3pm (option to camp out at the Riddell cabin), Sunday - 9am - 3pm
What does the workshop cost?
The workshop is FREE thanks in part to a generous grant from the California Fire Foundation.
Do I need prior experience working in the field?
Absolutely not! Anyone is welcome regardless of experience, but participants must be comfortable spending the day working outdoors in a relatively remote place.
Can I use this course toward college internship credits or community service hours?
Yes. Participants are welcome to work with an advisor and use the course towards credits or seek community services hours and/or extra credit from the training.
How do I know which course is right for me?
October 20-22 is open to female/nonbinary participants ages 18-30 and will be a maximum of 10 people. This course is suited for younger professionals, students, or landowners interested in ecosystem health, restoration, biodiversity, or careers in forestry and fire.
