Docent Program Training

Join our two-day training to become a Docent with us! Docents are critical to increasing access to the nature preserves through creative and inspiring outings on the land, and you'll get to explore the preserves on your own as an added perk! Sunday November 24th from 10am to 1pm and Sunday December 8th from 10am to 4pm. Location information will be sent out after registration. 

*To complete the training, you must participate in both days:
Sunday November 24th, from 10am to 1pm - On this day we will visit the site, get familiar with the main trails, rest areas and potential danger spots. We will also cover some of the natural history (geology, biology, ecology) as well as the backstory of the preserve.
 
Sunday December 8th, from 10am to 4pm - Indoors, classroom style. During this training day, we will cover the Docent Handbook and review essential procedures and requirements to maintain a successful program.

By participating in this training, you will:
  • Spend time and become familiar with the land
  • Have the opportunity to design your own outings throughout the year
  • Learn the steps for leading a successful LandPaths outing

Please read the details below before registering
 
Steps to becoming a LandPaths volunteer docent: 
  1. Attend both days of the training
  2. Complete the Agreement Form / Liability Waiver (at training)
  3. Apprentice on at least one staff or experienced docent led outing
  4. Participate in four enrichment activities throughout the first year
Ideally, volunteer docents should be able to: 
  • Be comfortable presenting to and leading small groups 
  • Walk or hike 2-5 miles on moderately hilly terrain
  • Willing to learn and share knowledge about the reserve and LandPaths
  • Be comfortable in weather and changing temperatures
Requirements to be a volunteer docent:
  • 18 years or older
  • Current First aid/CPR certification (can be obtain after this training)
Commitments:
  • Be an active LandPaths Docent for the year
  • Lead a minimum of 4 guided outings per year
  • Plan and be prepared for your guided outing
  • Provide a Field Report following each outing
Cost

Participation in the first two orientation trainings is free of charge. Participation in subsequent enrichment activities may have a cost or suggested donation of approximately $10-$40. Scholarships are available. First Aid/CPR Certification cost is around $40. Scholarships are available.
