Post-burn hike: Fire ecology at Calabazas Creek

LandPaths and Ag + Open Space invite you to join us for a walk through Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve. Located in the Nunns Valley, this 1,290-acre piece of land was affected by the 2017 Sonoma Complex Fires. The property offers a wide range of habitats such as forests and oak woodlands, coyote bush scrub, riparian corridors, wetlands, and springs. On this walk, we will explore the preserve and highlight the importance of fire ecology on the property, and how California native plants have evolved over time to adapt to fire. We will also discuss what local agencies in the region are doing to work with the land’s need for fire management. Due to the condition of the Preserve as a result of the Nuns Fire, this hike is for adults only.

Where: Safeway-100 Calistoga Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95409. We will meet at the Safeway in Rincon Valley (corner of Hwy. 12 and Calistoga Rd), off Highway 12, and will then caravan over to the preserve. Look for a LandPaths sign, or staff and volunteers to direct you in. 

What to bring:

• Lunch and snacks for the day
• Comfortable shoes
• Clothing in layers
• Sun gear- sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. etc.
• Hiking poles 
• Binoculars 
• Something to write with/on

What to expect:

•  This hike will be led by Monica Delmartini, Resident Fire Ecologist for the Ag+ Open Space district and LandPaths staff 
• Our route will be 5 miles total, with rocky/uneven footing on steep terrain. 
• We will stay together as a group
• You will be asked to sign a liabilty waiver upon arrival
•  We ask that youleave your pets at home for this event
• No smoking please
• Due to the condition of the Preserve as a result of the Nuns Fire, this hike is for adults only.
