Healdsburg Ridge Open Space Preserve

In addition there will be an orientation to the land for those who plan to lead outings at Healdsburg Ridge or Fitch Mountain. The dates for those preserve orientations will be: April 25th at Fitch Mountain and May 2nd at Healdsburg Ridge

*To complete the training, you must participate in the April 18th training and at least one of the property-specific orientations.

General Docent Training April 18  10:00am - 3:00pm  (held at Healdsburg Ridge)

Fitch Mountain Land Orientation: April 25  10:00am - 3:00pm

Healdsburg Ridge Land Orientation: May 2  10am -  3:00pm

Join our two-weekend training to become a docent at the spectacular Healdsburg Ridge Preserve and/or Fitch Mountain. 

 

Healdsburg Open Space Preserve is a close-to-home opportunity to immerse in the natural world. Explore 150 acres of wetlands and oak woodlands, rocky serpentine chaparral, and open grasslands on easy-to-moderate hiking trails. Get inspired by views of Fitch Mountain, the Russian River, and the Mayacama Mountains. A biodiverse wonderland, the preserve is home to a variety of natural communities, including deer, jackrabbit, bobcats, mountain lions, and more than 40 species of birds. As a docent, you can help to share the experience with others (and you also get to explore the preserve on your own!) LandPaths partners with the City of Healdsburg to steward and maintain the property. 

 

By participating in this training, you will:

  • Learn tips and tricks for leading a succesful hike
  • Become intimately familiar with this amazing land
  • Have the opportunitiy to design your own outings throughout the year

How to become a Hike Docent Volunteer

Following are the steps that must be followed in order to become a volunteer Hike Docent.

  1. Sign up for the training by registering below on the LandPaths website.
  2. Fill out the online application form to tell us a little more about yourself
  3. Attend Docent Training (April 18th)
  4. Choose the Preserve(s) you would like to be involved in (and register for those preserve orientations - April 25 and/or May 2)
  5. Complete the Agreement Form / Liability Waiver (to be sent to you after you register or at training)
  6. Apprentice on at least one (1) staff led hikes at the preserve
  7. Over the course of the year, attend at least 1 enrichment workshop

Volunteer Ability

  • Docents should be able to walk or hike at least 5 miles on moderately hilly terrain.
  • Docents should be comfortable presenting to small groups.

Requirements of Volunteers

  • Docents must be 18 years or older.
  • Docents must be 1st aid/CPR certified.

Commitment

  • Hike Docents must commit to the Hike Docent Program for at least one year.
  • Hike Docents must commit to leading a minimum of 1 guided hike/outing each year, and supporting another docent on a minimum of 1 outing each year.
  • Hike Docents will submit a Field Report following each guided hike within 24 hours.
  • Leading a docent hike takes approximately 4 hours.

Cost

  • Participation in the first two orientation trainings is free of charge.
  • Participation in subsequent enrichment courses will cost approximately $25 for each course. Scholarships are available for the enrichment courses.
  • 1st Aid / CPR training will be paid for by the volunteer.
