Help Plant Redwoods at Rancho Mark West!

We need your help planting Redwood saplings at Rancho Mark West! You can be part of an amazing legacy by planting these trees that will potentially live hundreds, even thousands, of years.

On December 5, we'll be planting 4500 redwood saplings sourced from Mendocino Redwood Company. These need to be planted quickly and we need all the people-power we can muster and that means you! This is a family friendly stewardship opportunity! We'll provide the tools and the know-how and even some snacks!

Regenerating the forest will support LandPaths to continue to host community gatherings, school visits, and Owl Campers into perpetuity, while helping to heal and protect the watershed, the creek, and the overall health of the land.

Redwoods have remarkable carbon sequestering capabilities, essential if we are going to limit global warming to less than 1.5° over the next decades.

Background:

In October 2020, Rancho Mark West was severely damaged by the Glass Fire. A significant number of dead trees had to be logged and removed by way of chipping and burning to reduce fuels that would push the spread of future wildfires. Without the trees, the one-mile stretch of Mark West Creek has suffered from the erosion of hillsides as sediment fills the water, impacting the downstream habitat.

Getting these Redwood saplings in the ground will have so many benefits for the land and people. Besides, what could be more fun and fulfilling on a December weekend than planting future majestic trees? Please join us!

Where: Rancho Mark West is located on the ancestral territory of the Southern Pomo people and the Wappo people. Just 20 minutes from downtown Santa Rosa, Rancho Mark West is LandPaths' outdoor classroom, community hub, and place of refuge in the Mayacamas Mountains. LandPaths, with generous assistance from the California Coastal Conservancy, purchased Rancho Mark West in 2011. Under the purchase terms, Jim and Betty Doerkson, have a reserved life estate on the property. LandPaths and the Doerksens participate in this land ownership partnership as a way to love the land and engage the public forever, especially local children, through outings and outdoor education.

Where to Meet: Rancho Mark West is located at 7125 St. Helena Road, Santa Rosa. From Santa Rosa, head down Hwy 12 towards Sonoma and turn left on Calistoga Road. After a few miles, turn right on St. Helena Road. Look for the LandPaths' sign in the driveway. Turn right and then park in the small parking lot on the right. 

What is LandPaths' Covid-19 volunteer workday policy? Please read the most recent version of LandPaths' Covid-19 policy before attending the workday. 

Does rain mean the workday is cancelled? The stewardship workday will move forward if there is a light drizzle, but a torrential rainstorm will cancel.  Please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 7am the morning of the stewardship day if the weather feels questionable. If you don't hear a notice of cancellation on the outgoing voice message, the stewardship day is moving forward.  

What should you bring? 

• Picnic lunch, snacks & plenty of water
• A backpack to hold your gear
• Sturdy boots or shoes that can get muddy
• Long pants recommended 
• Work gloves 
• Hat and sun screen 
• Hand sanitizer and mask
• Bring your own tools if you like. No power tools please. 

What else do you need to know? 

• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
• No stewardship or volunteer experience necessary! 
• There is a restroom and potable water at the property. 
• No pets or smoking.

A solo 20 minutos del centro de Santa Rosa, Rancho Mark West es el aula al aire libre, el centro comunitario y el lugar de refugio de LandPaths en las montañas Mayacamas. LandPaths, con la generosa ayuda de California Coastal Conservancy, compró Rancho Mark West en 2011. Dónde reunirse: Rancho Mark West está ubicado en 7125 St. Helena Road, Santa Rosa. Desde Santa Rosa, diríjase por la Hwy 12 hacia Sonoma y gire a la izquierda en Calistoga Road. Después de unos kilómetros, gire a la derecha en St. Helena Road. Busque el letrero de LandPaths en el camino de entrada. Gire a la derecha y luego estacione en el pequeño estacionamiento a la derecha.

¿La lluvia significa que la jornada laboral está cancelada? La jornada laboral de mayordomía avanzará si hay una llovizna ligera, pero se cancelará una tormenta torrencial. Llame al 707-544-7284 (luego presione 1) después de las 7 am la mañana del día de mayordomía si el clima se siente cuestionable. Si no escucha un aviso de cancelación en el mensaje de voz saliente, el día de la mayordomía avanza.

Que traer:

• Almuerzo, bocadillos y suficiente agua, mochila para guardar su equipo

• Botas resistentes o zapatos que pueden embarrarse

• Se recomiendan pantalones largos

• Tus propios guantes de trabajo

• Sombrero y protector solar

• Mascarilla y desinfectante de manos

Detalles:

• Habrá una estación para lavarse las manos.

• La caminata hasta el sitio del proyecto es de ~ 1.5 millas de ida y vuelta por un sendero empinado, pero bien nivelado.

• Se le pedirá que firme una exención de responsabilidad.

• No hay baños en el lugar.

• No hay agua potable disponible en la propiedad.

• No se permiten mascotas ni fumar.
