Stewardship Day at Fitch Mountain

Where: Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve is a 173-acre property that encompasses the entire peak of Fitch Mountain and surrounding slopes. Explore a dense forest of coast redwood, Douglas fir, California bay, madrone, oaks, and a rich array of understory species. Fitch Mountain is located on the ancestral home of the Southern Pomo people, past, present, and future. We recognize them as the first people and the first stewards of this land. We are on occupied territory and acknowledge the ongoing devastation of colonization. 

Volunteer Workday Tasks:The focus of today's work day will be pulling French Broom along the fire road. French Broom (Genista monspessulana) is an invasive plant thats grow very fast and grow in dense stands. If left unchecked they can overshadow the understory plant community and become a fuel ladder. For this workday, you'll help to manage french broom that grows beneath the canopies of the oaks and madrones. This land management task supports biodiversity in the oak woodlands and encourages the forest to be more resilient in the face of wildfire.

What is LandPaths' Covid-19 volunteer workday policy? Please read the most recent version of LandPaths' Covid-19 policy before attending the workday.  

Does rain mean the workday is cancelled? The stewardship workday will move forward if there is a light drizzle, but a torrential rainstorm will cancel.  Please call 707-544-7284 (then press 1) after 7am the morning of the stewardship day if the weather feels questionable. If you don't hear a notice of cancellation on the outgoing voice message, the stewardship day is moving forward.   

What should you bring?  

• Picnic lunch, snacks & plenty of water, backpack to hold your gear 

• Sturdy boots or shoes that can get muddy 

• Long pants recommended  

• Your own workgloves   

• Hat and sun screen  

• Hand sanitizer and mask 

What else do you need to know?  

• A handwashing station will be available. 

• No experience necessary! 

• We'll provide the tools. 

• Expect to do a 1.5 mile round trip hike up a steep but well-graded trail to the project site.  

• You will be asked to sign a liability waiver. 

• No restroom on-site 

• No potable water available on the property. Make sure to fill up your water bottle ahead of time.  

• No pets or smoking.

¿Dónde?: Fitch Mountain Park y Open Space Preserve es una propiedad de 173 acres que abarca todo el pico de Fitch Mountain y las laderas circundantes. Explore un denso bosque de secuoyas costeras, abetos de Douglas, laurel de California, madroños, robles y una rica variedad de especies del sotobosque. Fitch Mountain se encuentra en el hogar ancestral del pueblo Pomo del Sur, pasado, presente y futuro. Los reconocemos como las primeras personas y los primeros administradores de esta tierra. Estamos en territorio ocupado y reconocemos la devastación continua de la colonización.

Tareas del día: Este día nos enfocamos en arrancar la retamilla que crece bajo las copas de los robles y madroños.  La retamilla (Genista monspessulana) es una planta invasora que crece muy rápido y crece en rodales densos. Si no se controlan, invaden los bosques de robles y aumientan el riesgo de que los incendios forestales alcancen las copas de los árboles más establecidos. Esta trababajo apoya la biodiversidad en los bosques de robles y fomenta la resistencia a los incendios forestales.

Instrucciones: Nos reuniremos a las 9 am en el estacionamiento del parque para perros Villa Chanticleer (lado oeste de Fitch) y caminaremos juntos hacia el sitio del proyecto. ¿La lluvia significa que está cancelada? Se cancelará solamente en caso de una tormenta torrencial. Llame al 707-544-7284 (luego presione 1) después de las 7 am la mañana del día, si desea confirmar. Si no escucha un aviso de cancelación en el mensaje de voz saliente, el día no sido cancelado.

¿Qué traer?:

• Almuerzo, bocadillos y suficiente agua, mochila para guardar sus cosas

• Botas resistentes o zapatos que pueden embarrarse

• Se recomiendan pantalones largos

• Tus propios guantes de trabajo

• Sombrero y protector solar

• Mascarilla y desinfectante de manos

¿Qué más?

• Habrá una estación para lavarse las manos.

• No se nesecita experiencia 

• Proveremos todas las herramientas 

• Una caminata al sitio del proyecto de ~ 1.5 millas de ida y vuelta por un sendero empinado, pero bien nivelado.

• Se le pedirá que firme una exención de responsabilidad.

• No hay baños en el lugar.

• No hay agua potable disponible en la propiedad.

• No se permiten mascotas ni fumar.
